Run the Experiments (18) - One Last Coffee

(September 25th, 2017) Here's a new episode of Lab Times' serialised crime story.

It was a rough day yesterday. Charlotte was still trying to cope with the aftermath of the lab party and the incident with Marcus. It was really strange. Never in her whole life, could she have imagined that Marcus would stoop so low. Steal her data; betray their friendship. And for what? For some fast money and a Nature publication? Clearly, this publish or perish culture only brings out the worst in people. And, of course, Charlotte knew what she was talking about; had she not succumbed to it herself? How could she then justify being angry with Marcus? Perhaps, in his situation, she would have done exactly the same.

Be that as it may, Charlotte still had to clean up her small flat and set the table before Marcus arrived for coffee. A last conversation face-to-face before he left for Germany, an opportunity to truly clear the air.

Ding, dong the doorbell chimed.

“Hey, good to see you, Marcus!”

“Thanks for having me. I was afraid you would never talk to me again, after my appalling behaviour.”

“Nah, we all make mistakes, errors of judgement from time to time. As you said, friendship is much more important. How did you like your coffee? Sugar? Milk?”

“Black, thanks!”

Charlotte disappeared into the kitchen. Soon, the coffee machine started making familiar bubbling, spluttering noises.

“Black for you; white for me!” Charlotte placed the steaming beverage in front of Marcus and took a seat.

“Thanks, thanks!”

Marcus took a large gulp of the hot brew. “Ouch!”

“Slow down, we have plenty of time,” Charlotte smiled.

“Unfortunately, not! I just got a message that my plane leaves earlier than planned, so I'll have to leave sooner than I'd like.”

And with that, he downed the rest of his coffee in one gulp, said a hasty goodbye and left.

Charlotte was left dumbfounded. Why suddenly so hectic? Change of plan? Earlier departure? Could she really believe him?

But his departing words remained with her, “...leave sooner than I'd like.” Of course, this was Marcus, how could she doubt him.
