Run the Experiments (17) - The Confession

(September 18th, 2017) Here's a new episode of Lab Times' serialised crime story.

“Give it to me!” Charlotte demanded resolutely, almost yelling at Marcus.

“What are you talking about?” It was almost a whisper.

“The USB stick. Don't mess with me!”

“Ok, here it is.” Now Marcus sounded as meek as a lamb.

“Why are you doing this; stealing my data?”

“Prof Bernard – he pressured me to do this. I'm so sorry,” Marcus sat down in Charlotte's office chair, his entire body slumped.

“He promised me a Nature publication and funding for three years. You know my situation; I had to take that opportunity.”

“I can't believe this is true. You betrayed me for a paper and some cash? How could you?”

“My wife; her contract just ended and it's hard to find a new postdoc place for her. Not in Heidelberg, at least. And... and our daughter starts school in the autumn. I couldn't pass up this offer. I'm so sorry, I apologise from the bottom of my heart.” Marcus looked at her with those puppy dog eyes, you can't resist.

“I, I'm not sure that I can just let this go.” Charlotte was already softening to Marcus' plight.

“I'll tell Bernard I couldn't do it. You're one of my favourite colleagues and I don't want to jeopardise our friendship. You're right. What was I thinking?!” he began, remorsefully

“That's more like it, Marcus.” The corners of her mouth started to twitch, a smile slowly creeping on. “And what about that Nature publication?”

“Ah, screw that paper. I don't want to publish in profit-greedy glam mags like Nature anyway.”

“That's definitely the right attitude! As disappointed as I am, I'll forgive you for this unfortunate incident – but only if you come over to my place tomorrow for a coffee before you leave.”

“Sure, I will, yes, I would love to. Thank you, Charlotte, thank you for being so understanding.”
