Science Fun of the Week

(August 25th, 2017) Get ready for your weekly dose of science fun. Today: A praise of flow cytometry.

In 1977, Howard M. Shapiro, one of the founding fathers of cytometry, published a musical paper in the Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry.

Blood cells are classified by cell and nuclear shape and size
And texture, and affinity for differenty types of dyes
And almost all of these parameters can quickly be
Precisely measured by techniques of flow cytometry.

It's hard to fix a cell suspension rapidly and stain
With several fluorochromes, and this procedure, while it plain-
Ly furnishes the data which one needs to classify,
May fade away, and new, simpler methods never dye.

The stains which hematologists routinely use on smears
Assiduously kept their basic nature through the years
Since Romanowsky made his variation on a theme
Paul Ehrlich wrote some time before he chased the treponeme.
