Run the Experiments (6) - Caught!
(May 15th, 2017) Here's a new episode of Lab Times' serialised crime story.
There he was, Prof Bernard, staring at the computer screen, which scroll by scroll was revealing her secret data. The mere glow of the bald patch on the back of his head was enough and she froze to the spot. Hastily and with a visible degree of infuriation, he was pounding the computer keyboard, uncovering ever more data. Her heart beat faster and faster, she almost stopped breathing.
No, not the ELISA results, Charlotte cringed in desperation. Those were the most promising. She and Marcus had just finished the experiments; they had discovered a significant difference between treated and untreated mice. It had taken them three months to complete, working at night whenever they could but the efforts were so worth it. With these data alone, they could get a high impact publication and apply for funding. Perhaps, they could even launch their own start-up.
Prof Bernard clicked further. Numerous diagrams, tables and microscopy images passed before his eyes. Data, he had never seen before. All the single pieces of the puzzle fell together, there, in his hands. Prof Bernard slowly started to understand, what he had just discovered.
All of a sudden, he became agitated, began rummaging in the pockets of his jacket and trousers. What was he looking for? From the right trouser pocket, he produced a USB stick and plugged it in. Charlotte winced, she felt like throwing up. Had it all been in vain? All the hard work? The lack of sleep? The social isolation?
“Beep!” The shrill error tone jolted Charlotte back to the real world: “storage device full”. Uttering a string of swear words, Prof Bernard stood up and left the lab. Charlotte's head was spinning. She only had a few minutes. It was now or never.
